“Our biggest challenges are where the greatest miracles reside.”
Walking through the Kibera slums in Nairobi, Kenya was one of the most challenging things I ever did.
At first it was overwhelming with the smell of sewage and garbage, the poverty, the suffering, the struggle, the violence, the danger….it was all I could feel and see. I could feel the physical and emotional pain of everyone. With one million people living in 1 square mile of extreme poverty, there was a lot of intense energy and pain.
As I navigated my way through the sewage filled paths between the mud homes I kept repeating the words “one step at a time”. An intense sadness filled my heart and mind. I prayed for another perspective because the one I was seeing was too painful and too big a burden to bear.
Suddenly I heard two children singing “how are you? How are you? How are you?”. They were jumping up and down in an attempt to get my attention. My eyes landed on them and I could feel the joy in their hearts as they smiled and waved at me.
I realized that while there may be a lot of suffering in Kibera but there is also joy. Suddenly I began to see the joy in the eyes of the children and the strength and determination in the eyes of the women and mothers.
That moment was the miracle that strengthened my vision to empower mothers, uplift families and children and inspire the community of Kibera through our Heart Led Living Foundation.
When we use our life’s challenges as an opportunity to heal or inspire us to create change, we will feel more empowered. We also open ourselves up to witness the miracles and receive the gifts that come from following our heart’s path and living on purpose.
Next time you are faced with a challenge, trust that your life is happening for your deepest healing and greatest awakening. If a challenge is on your path, embrace it and trust it is purposeful and filled with potential miracles.
Heart hugs, Sue
